  1.  Before beginning, check your emotions. How do you feel? Do you feel clever? Creative? Practical would be better. Level-headed would be great. Fanciful would be bad. And whimsical would be very, very bad.
  2. Don’t be funny. If you’re naming a pet, you can be funny. The name “Chris P. Bacon” for a guinea pig is ironic and clever. The name “Ben Dover” for a son is tragic.
